What We’re Playing: 16th November 2012

Us lot at Origin8 don’t just make games, we spend a lot of time playing them too. Here’s a look at what’s grabbed our attention recently:

October / November is always a very busy release time for all the big AAA titles so…
On the XBOX I’ve been games juggling. Currently switching between Borderlands2, Dishonored, XCOM Enemy Unknown, Halo 4, NFS Most wanted, Call of Duty Black Ops2, Assassin’s Creed 3 and Forza Horizon. The multi player in Black Ops as always great fun, even though I’m still terrible at it. And while Halo 4 looks absolutely stunning, it’s not really grabbed me as much as previous ones. But the game that is hogging most of my time is Forza Horizon. I’ve never really been a fan of the other Forza games, I prefer my racers less hardcore. Horizon seems to hit the spot perfectly between realism and arcade fun.

On iOS I’m still enjoying the highly addictive Super Hexagon. Plus, I was very interested to try Curiosity by 22Cans, and while I find it a very interesting idea, it hasn’t grabbed me as a ‘game’. I’ve probably invested more time reading about it on the internet than actually playing it.

Currently about to finish off Dead Space 2. Didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as the first one, but I’ve been hooked on it for the past week. Also playing Skyrim in tandem. About 50 hours in and there are still loads to do! Other than that, I’m on Prison Architect alpha which is still in it’s early days, but already looking promising.

PC: XCOM – superb strategy game, still need to be brave and try Ironman mode.
Skyrim – Breathtaking graphics, and gameplay that seems to swing between ‘amazing’ and ‘boring’. I still keep going back to it though…
Counterstrike: GO – FPS in it’s purest and best form. This new CS is brought right up to date, and still feels better than anything you can do with a gamepad.

iOS: Hero Academy – cute little strategy game that suits mobile devices perfectly

Wii: Mario Galaxy 2 – my boy has just discovered the joys of Yoshi and Mario so I have to be on hand to help him through the tough parts!

For the past few days I’ve been playing The Battle for Wesnoth, an open source TBS that’s also out on iOS and Android. I suspect I’m really pretty crap at it – I managed to get something like 85% of my levelled units massacred last night, so I’ll have to hang out the “WANTED: CANNONFODDER” sign when I pick it up later. I’ve seen a bit of discussion about the randomness of the random number generator in Wesnoth, in that luck has too great a role in success or failure. I’ll have to play a bit more and see how that shakes out in the long run.
